Why is important to have well maintained tires in Los Angeles?

Our clients are often involved in tire related car accidents in Los Angeles. It is critical to drive an automobile that is in the safest condition possible. Part of ensuring optimal safety is making sure your tires are properly inflated, sufficient treaded, and not punctured. Making sure that your tires are in optimal condition not only decreases the risk of car accidents, but also improves vehicle fuel economy.

Many car accidents that happen in Los Angeles occur because of tire manufacturing defects. Like with car manufacturers in recent years, tire manufacturers too have had to recall thousands of tires because of manufacturing deficiencies. For example, in 2007-2009 Bridgstone recalled hundreds of thousands of Firestone tires because of poor manufacturing. The defect could cause tread separation and loss of control of a vehicle after prolonged use. Tire recalls have become more common recently due to tire companies importing cheap rubber and tires from factories in China.

In addition to car accidents being caused by defectively manufactured tires, accidents also occur because of inadequate tire maintenance. You should maintain and inspect your tires monthly. Some ways to properly maintain your tires are:
- Checking tire pressure. Check your vehicle’s user manual to establish how inflated your tires should be. If you cannot find this information in your vehicle manual, call the car dealership where you bought your car, and ask for this information.
- Inspect your tires for any punctures, cracks, or tears. If you can visibly observe any punctures, tears or cracks on your tires, there may be a chance that your tires are losing air pressure.
- Determine how much tread your tires have. Tread refers to the depth of the grooves on the tires. It is important to avoid “treadware.” If your tire treat is below 1/16th of an inch, you should replace your tires.
- Inspect your tire valves to insure that they all have caps. This is imperative to avoid poorly inflated tires.
